We all love fresh food, but unfortunately it doesn't stay that way forever. Like when you find a nasty surprise in the fruit bowl or the fridge when something doesn't get eaten in time. Every product has its use by date, but here are some ways to delay that inevitable d-day.
General Tips
Airtight Containers
These are essential! They'll extend the life of almost anything from rice, to nuts or sliced up fruit and veg.
Fridge Temperature
It's important to keep your refrigerator at the right temperature – between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius.
Avoid Moisture
It promotes rotting and mould. Try wiping down fruit and veg with a paper towel before storing it.
Storing Different Products
Bananas
Keep them at room temperature until they're ripe, then transfer them to fridge, or even the freezer. If you forget to move them in time don't worry, now you've got a good reason to bake a yummy banana cake!
Capsicum
If you're only using a small section of it, keep the membrane seeds and stem intact – it will keep for much longer this way.
Lettuce
Wrap the lettuce in paper towels then store it in a plastic bag in the fridge. This will keep it crisp and fresh.
Cheese
Remove it from its packaging, then rewrap it in plastic wrap or wax paper, and seal it in a plastic bag.
Icecream
Place a sheet of wax paper on top of the ice-cream, under the lid to keep it creamy and soft for longer.
Eggs
Keep them in their original packaging, never inside the egg compartment in the fridge door.
